Insurance for Snow Pushers, Plow Blades and Attachments

Blades and pushers are where much of a snow contractor's capital sits. A commercial V plow with mount, a large containment pusher for a loader, wings, back drag edges and quick attach systems can add up to more than the truck they ride on.

Mounted vs Stored

  • On a licensed truck. A declared, mounted blade may be covered by the auto policy, up to a limit. Confirm both.
  • On a skid steer or loader. Attachments are scheduled with the machine on your equipment policy.
  • In the yard or shop. Detached attachments are equipment exposures. Theft from yards in the off season is common.

The simplest approach for many contractors is to schedule every attachment on the equipment policy so coverage does not depend on where it happens to be.

Values and Records

Keep a list of every blade and pusher with make, model, serial number, purchase price and photos. Cutting edges and wear parts are maintenance; sudden loss or damage is what insurance addresses.

Liability

A blade that contacts a car, curb, door or pedestrian creates a claim under your general liability or auto policy, depending on the circumstances.

See the machines these attach to: pickups, heavy trucks, skid steers and loaders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my plow blade covered when it is off the truck for the summer?

Not necessarily under the auto policy. Scheduling it on an equipment policy gives year round coverage.

Are worn cutting edges covered?

No. Wear parts are maintenance and are excluded.
